What Is a Lip Lift?
If you are unhappy with the appearance of your lips, you may have considered getting lip fillers to enhance the volume of your lips. However, lip fillers are not the only option to improve your smile. A lip lift is a surgical procedure that can permanently change the shape and size of your lips, giving you a more youthful and attractive look.
A lip lift is a surgical procedure that elevates the upper lip by removing skin between the nose and the border of the top lip. By shortening the distance between the nose and the top of the lip, the redness of the lip starts to roll outward, creating a more volumized look. A lip lift also increases how much of your upper teeth show when your lips are resting, which is considered a sign of beauty and youth. A lip lift can be customized to suit your preferences and facial features.
Overall, a lip lift can be a highly effective way to achieve a more youthful appearance of the lips, and can have a positive impact on a person's self-confidence and quality of life. If you are considering having a lip lift in Michigan, it is important to choose a board-certified facial plastic surgeon with extensive experience in the procedure to ensure the best possible results. A lip lift can be a good option for people who want to enhance their lips without adding volume or having repeated injections. A lip lift can also correct some common issues with aging lips, such as:
- A long or flat upper lip
- A lack of tooth show
- A downturned or sad-looking mouth
- A loss of definition or contour
A good candidate for a lip lift should be in good health, have realistic expectations, and understand the risks and benefits of surgery.
Many patients may have the procedure under local anesthesia in the office. However, some patients choose to have twilight anesthesia.
- Active infections or inflammation around the mouth
- Allergies or sensitivities to anesthesia or medications
- Active smoking or nicotine use
- Medical conditions that affect healing or blood clotting
Surgical recovery varies from person to person. However, after a lip lift, you can expect some swelling, bruising, pain, and numbness around your mouth. You will need to keep your head elevated and apply ice packs to reduce inflammation. You will also need to avoid eating hard or spicy foods, drinking through a straw, smoking, or kissing for two weeks.
You should be able to resume your normal activities within a week, but you should avoid strenuous exercise for two weeks and direct sun exposure for at least four weeks. You will see some improvement in your lips right away, but it may take several months for the final result to settle. The scar from your incision will fade over time and become less noticeable.

Lip lift surgery is not considered a covered benefit under most insurance policies.
A lip lift is generally considered a safe and effective procedure, but like any surgery, it carries some risks and potential complications. These include:
- Bleeding or hematoma
- Infection or wound breakdown
- Scarring
- Asymmetry or unevenness
- Nerve damage or numbness
- Changes in sensation
- Difficulty speaking or smiling
- Dissatisfaction with the outcome
To minimize these risks, you should choose a qualified and experienced surgeon who specializes in lip lifts and facial plastic surgery.
